Diesel Mechanic Training School – Where to Start

If you want to work as a diesel mechanic for large trucks, buses and construction machines, then you need special training and certification from one of the diesel tech schools. The learning path is neither short, nor easy. But if you are really determined to pursue this career, you will enjoy every challenge.

Preparing for a Diesel Mechanic Job

First of all, arm yourself with the positive idea that the job you want to choose will be in high demand on the short and medium term. According to the US Bureau for Labor Statistics, there will be an average 5% growth in diesel mechanic jobs until 2028.

Now let’s move on to the training you need:

1. Postsecondary Training

After graduating from high school, you can choose to learn the job working for 3-4 years as a journey-level technician. However, you get better chances to earn your license with flying colors if you go to a diesel engine repair or service technology program.

2. Specialization

During the technology program, you should focus on specializing in a niche, for instance, high-performance powertrain service or light-duty diesel mechanics. This will allow you to earn a higher salary in the future.

3. Certification

Once you completed the technology program, it is time to apply for certification at the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence. The ASE certification is recognized everywhere in the US and gives you a competitive edge against other job applicants.
